MTV VMA’s 2015: Highlights and Overall Winner & Loser of the VMA’s

This year’s Video Music Awards already had its fair share of controversy before the night’s proceedings had even kicked off. From the “race issue” Nicki Minaj tried to make about her song Anaconda not being nominated for Video of the Year to the appointment of the tongue-waggin’, bum shakin’, marijuana smokin’, former Disney sweetheart Miley Cyrus being the host for the evening.

This year was definitely looking like it would be less about the awards and more about the various personalities in attendance and it did not disappoint! Shade was thrown, tears were shed and Twitter went in to meltdown with “#VMAs” peaking at 7.73 million tweets and still increasing as I type.

Nicki Minaj & Taylor Swift Duet – Considering the duo’s previous feud based around this very event made this rather collaboration all the more suprising. Nicki kicked off this star-studded bash with “Trini Dem Girls” followed by Swift joining her to perform “The Night is Still Young” and ended on “Bad Blood”. The 2 seemed full of smiles after performing their set which looks to be the end of this *ahem* bad blood.

Amber Rose & Blac Chyna – This notorious double act rocked up to the VMA’s making a feminist statement through their outfits along with their 2 companions. It was a bold move from 2 bold characters but if anyone could pull it off it would have to be Rose and Chyna.

A Happy Kanye –  I don’t even know where to begin. This man went on to make the full event about him without even trying. A happy Kanye made an extremely rare appearance showing him laughing and joking with others, followed by him dancing to a live performance by The Weeknd after that he sat down and cuddled up with wife, Kim.

After receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award from Taylor Swift he then proceeded deliver a 10 minute speech which can safely be filed away under “Kanye Classics”. He called out MTV for milking the Taylor Swift incident in 2009, continued this year’s theme of “I Love Weed” by saying he had “rolled up a little something” before ending his speech by announcing he will be running for president in 2020. *mic drop*

The Return of the Bieber – It’s been a tough couple of years for the Biebs making more headlines for silliness rather than for his music but since the turn of the year I have witnessed a change in his behaviour. This year was truly a make or break year for him and the success of Where Are U Now definitely set him up for his own solo release of “What Do You Mean?” which is tipped to be the highest first-week debut of 2015. 485606128-1440806531

Justin appeared on-stage dressed in all black performing his and Jack U’s song “Where Are U Now” with slick dance moves and tight choreography where it then transitioned in to his new single “What Do You Mean?” which caused endless screams from the audience. He looked like a changed person during his performance, he isn’t that little boy anymore, he’s transformed in to this fine young man. It was great to witness someone come through a rough patch and perform the way that he did. The occasion must have been too much for Justin as he ended up shedding a few tears at the end of his set which left the audience applauding even longer. Truly emotional and heart-warming at the same time, I guess Bieber is back!

Nicki Minaj vs Miley Cyrus – After collecting her award for the Best Hip Hop Video for “Anaconda” she then proceeded to thank her fans and her pastor before calling out Miley for comments made in the press earlier that week. I had to make sure I hadn’t changed the channel and I was watching an awards show and not WWE! It’s fair to say judging by the look in Nicki’s eye and the sassy head motion Miley would be safer fighting The Rock than Nicki. Some quick thinking by Miley helped defuse the situation by passing the blame on to the media and moving swiftly on.

Nipplegate – If anyone was going to expose a nipple it was only ever going to be one person..

Miley Drops A New Album For Free – Just when all those Content Creators thought their articles were all ready to be published and they might just call it a night. Miley sticks 2 fingers up to them (figuratively) and drops a whole new album for free and then performs a new song from the album called “Dooo It” with the cast of Ru Paul behind her. You can get the album called Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz here.

Taylor Swift – 2015 really is Taylor’s year. She’s breaking records and cleaning up at every award show she attends, her last album was released less than a year ago an has sold 8.6m copies and her world tour looks to be the highest grossing tour of the year. Here she cemented her place as a true pop star who is currently unrivalled in what she does.

Meek Mill – Twitter is a ruthless place at the best of times and Meek is experiencing that right now since his Drake feud. When Nicki was announced as the winner for best Hip Hop video, Meek got a bit excited as you can see here and well, Twitter fingers went to work – It never helped the fact that his rumoured fiancé thanked her fans and pastor and failed to mention him

Do you think Taylor deserved to win as many as she did? Do you feel sorry for Meek Mill? Which was your favourite performance? Who do you want to see host MTV VMA 2016? Did you like Miley hosting this year and her new album? Let me know your thoughts!

  1. Love the post! Thanks for the recap for those of us who didn’t watch it but wanted to. I think T-Swift deserves her awards because she is truly a very influential and talented figure in the music industry- even though there are definitely those who would argue otherwise. She’s one of the few who seems to really know what she wants to do and convey with her music. I’m also so glad JB’s coming back a new person! I really enjoy his new songs. 🙂
